COCHE-COLOR is an extract made from female scale insects Dactylopius coccus. Using an aluminum mordant, this natural dye can produce various bright crimson shades. The ladybird-sized scale insects are cultivated on prickly pear cacti. A color extract is made from the cochineal insects, which is also used for food coloring. In the past, the extracts were also used to dye crimson liturgical garments.
