"Farben so bunt wie die Natur" DVD
DOBAG in Turkey
Color Pot of Nature” is the name of the film about the revival of natural dyeing in 25 villages in western Turkey. From 1981, Dr. Harald Böhmer, how people used to dye there, he tried out the old recipes and researched the dyes in antique carpets. He then passed the newly gained knowledge back to the local people in many dyeing courses. DOBAG is a project of the Marmara University in Istanbul and something like a seal of approval. From the sheep's wool, which is dyed according to old traditions, the women weave carpets that are loved all over the world. Most of the plants for dyeing can be found on site. Chamomile for yellow grows around the villages in spring. Madder, a nondescript herb whose dried and ground roots provide a dye for red, is being grown again in gardens, as is madder, whose leaves and stems are useful for yellowing. Women dye blue with indigo powder, one of the oldest dyes. Unfortunately, the project ended in 2019 and the old knowledge is now in danger of being lost again. artis tinctoria in Germany " Color Rush" is the name of the film in which we introduce Dieter Kaiser. He ensures that natural dyeing lives on. He has been coloring in his workshop in southern Germany for 40 years and creates a color palette that is second to none. He too uses madder from his garden to dye it red and dyer's woe to dye it yellow. But he also uses cochineal lice. And he varies the dye broth by changing the pH value or the stain with which the wool is pretreated. It gets really exciting when he overdyes the wool and dips the colorful strands into the indigo vat. Everything is done by hand for him, he doesn't like working with large machines so that he can always have enough influence on the dyeing. But above all it is important for him that natural dyeing is an ecological way of producing colour. He knows that natural colors can no longer replace synthetic colors today, but he still sees many more possible uses for them. And he wants the old craft to be preserved and passed on.
